Technology is a fast-paced and competitive field. When it comes to job requirements, there are always new skills that need to be learned to stay current with the latest trends.

There are a lot of myths in the IT industry. One of the most common myths floating around is that IT workers must know everything about every technology out there. This myth becomes fear sometimes.

The fact is, just like any other industry, you can specialize in one or two areas and still do pretty well for yourself. More importantly, what’s more, valuable than knowing all of this information? Being able to connect it well to others. This blog post will discuss some of the most prevalent myths in the IT world and how you can find your niche without having extensive knowledge.

Myths in the IT industry

So, you might have been thinking about switching careers but worry that it will be hard.
Information Technology is such a homogenous industry these days. What if I tell you there are tons of myths in the IT industry people have told themselves for years? You don’t need math or science skills; all they really care about when working in tech, no matter what sector, is their interpersonal abilities.
Following are some most common myths in the IT industry that are still used to fear the people to participate in the industry.

Computer science degree is important

This is one of the myths in the IT industry. I went to college for liberal arts and then business because that’s what people do when they want careers as entrepreneurs! But tech isn’t something we covered at all back in high school, so naturally, by the time it was time to get serious about studying computers (or design if one of those is your thing), everyone else had already started down their traditional career paths with degrees. While mine remains unstudied but still very much pursued–and nowhere am I today happily working away within this industry-related sphere without any real formal training save some computer classes taken during Junior year before even getting into higher-level education.

You should have great at maths and science

Math and science can be very useful if you want to be a developer. But that being said, not every developer needs these talents in math or science to succeed as a software developer as it is one of the myths in the IT industry.

.Sure having some killer mathematical skill set will help with data analysis tasks but even then the most important thing is knowing how technology works from both ends, users on one side and developers on another end who create what they need through programming languages.

Math and science skills are less important in areas like design or digital marketing, where artistic creativity will come in handy. If you want to have a successful career in tech, problem-solving skills are essential. You’ll find those especially helpful when it comes time for programming and development work that needs doing on your own projects or with other teams of developers.

IT is an unstable career field with no job security

There is some truth to this. There are a lot of startups out there that don’t last very long and open up before closing down with alarming speed.

The tech industry is a stable career field, with only a 2-3% unemployment rate. If you get laid off from one job it’s not the end of your world because there are always other positions that will be waiting for you if they need someone who has in-demand skills like yours. Here we prove one of the myths in the IT industry wrong.

You’ll get trapped in one thin career path

I’ve been a web designer, developer, and content marketer. I also dabbled in app development for Android devices as well as UX design when it came to websites or apps that require user-friendly interfaces with attractive graphics/illustrations on them (like Facebook).

It’s a male dominant field

IT means coding all the day

I know it’s tempting to spend all day coding, but don’t forget the other things you can do in tech. For example: designing products and marketing them on social media, or creating content for blogs or websites, helping others with their questions about computers by analyzing data from your research, providing customer service at companies like Microsoft or Google.

You will work alone all day

You will work a large number of hours everyday

Some people think that working long hours is the only way to get ahead in life. There is a lack of Creativity

There are many myths surrounding the topic of outsourcing. One that I find to be especially interesting and detrimental for both parties in an agreement, though not entirely accurate on either end depending upon who you ask or whom you’re speaking with at any given time; is this belief about why companies outsource jobs overseas because they want cheaper labor costs?

This couldn’t have been further from what transpired when I researched my dissertation last semester (and discovered a whole lot more than just how little some tech employees fetch).

The truth may surprise some people: the cost was only ever considered as one factor among many others during these discussions. What really drives decisions isn’t purely economic but also organizational dynamics ones linked closely enough together such that we can’t discuss.

If you have tech skills, the opportunities for jobs will far exceed in other industries. Even if a small percentage is being outsourced due to cost-cutting reasons there are many more positions open that require good employees who can do these tasks with ease and proficiency.

Your skills and experience does not required

In the workplace, have you learned how to communicate with your co-workers or customers? How are things like organization and time management coming along for a place like this one in particular? What about creative problem-solving skills – do they come naturally here too or were those taught as lessons on what not to do at work. Lastly would be deadlines; is there any room left over after these fun activities that need completing before next week’s final presentations, etc.?

In addition, we should ask ourselves if being part of an effective team was really our strength just yet or maybe leadership duties better suited us until now due.

Women in IT does not have any social support

Women in tech are not only gaining numbers, but also a sense of belonging. For example, there’s an active community that provides social support for these female engineers called Women In Tech.

If you’re feeling like the minority in your office, it can be hard to find support. But don’t worry, there are meetups for women who work remotely or want more female representation on teams.

Online communities where people ask questions about being an introvert at work (I’m one). The point is that if we all do just a little bit of digging around ourselves then surely there will no longer feel so alone anymore and instead have found someone with similar experiences as our own.

There is no work life balance

It’s a common myth in the IT industry that we all start work at 8am on Tuesday and Thursday mornings. In fact, different people have scheduled with different preferences for their morning routine.

I love starting my days before noon because it gives me more time during the week where I can do things like go to yoga or take long lunches without any worries about getting behind.

If you’re looking for a career that is flexible, remote-friendly, or can involve travel then tech might be the perfect fit. From working remotely and using your personal time wisely to taking on less traditional responsibilities like managing inventory in shipping warehouses; this industry has it all.

People in IT spend all day in a single room

Being in tech isn’t all about being broke and living with your mom. There are also people who work at amazing companies, have beautiful homes on two acres of land or an apartment complex near the ocean, and don’t even own a basement.

Being from Silicon Valley myself (my dad was part owner), it’s hard for me not to be biassed when talking about where great things happen here but just know that there really is more than one side to this story.

You have to be great at coding

Learning the “it” coding language is a great way to get into tech, but so too are having awesome design skills and social media marketing. Alternatively, you could create brilliant content that gets attention- like an engaging blog post or clever tweet. This is one of the biggest myths in the IT industry that you should have good knowledge about coding.

Age depends in IT industry

I got started in tech right around the time I was 21. And there are a lot of people still doing it at that age. But you know what they say, all things grow older together or something like that? Regardless, this means more than just being a young person anymore-tech careers require commitment and hard work regardless if your job title says “CEO” or not (although those usually come with higher salaries). So don’t think for one minute that maturity will exempt anyone from putting their head down every day until retirement because frankly, I haven’t met any yet. People working towards startups may find themselves on board early as these tend to be risky jobs requiring long hours which make them well suited only.

There’s no variety in IT

Diversity in the workplace has become a priority among much of the tech community. According to an article from Wall Street Journal, nine out of ten largest companies have minority employees who make up 41% – 69%. However, this varies by the company because there’s no set standard for what makes one “minority” or another person qualified enough as opposed to just being white males.

Programmers are all intellects

Some programmers are geniuses, while others have average intelligence. The most important thing for a programmer is to be good at problem-solving and creativity skills which are related but not directly dependent on IQ.

Some people think that programming requires an exceptional level of skill or talent; however, this couldn’t be any further from the truth! There’s plenty out there amongst brilliant intellects too so don’t feel bad if your math isn’t up to their alley either because it doesn’t matter as long you can think creatively & solve complex problems quickly with ease.

Startup fife is dazzling

There are plenty of perks to working at a startup, but the reality may not match up. Most companies throw awesome parties and get invited into all sorts of press events or award shows as they grow – this is just how it goes for startups.

But sometimes being early-stage can lead you down some less glamorous paths like delayed paychecks or crowded offices with limited resources where everyone works together with more closely than usual because there isn’t enough money yet.

However, I find that these changes make us bond even tighter over time since business has been slower lately (and celebrate when things pick back up).


Technology is at the forefront of our minds, with new innovations and jobs being created every day. But there are many myths in the IT industry. It’s important that we have a clear understanding of what type of career path may be best suited for us because technology changes so quickly.

There are many types/careers within IT: development; cybersecurity & cyber security solutions engineering manager programmer analyst system administrator software developer network engineer web designer, etc.
